About F1 Reaction Test

The F1 reaction test recreates a Formula 1 race start in your browser. Five pairs of red lights come on one by one, a second apart. Once all five are lit they hold for a random moment — then all go out at once, and that is the signal to launch. Click, tap, or press Space the instant the lights go out, and your reaction time is measured in milliseconds.

Just like on a real grid, you can't time it: the hold before lights out is random, so the only way to make a good start is to react. Move while the lights are still on and it's a jump start. Launch less than 100 milliseconds after lights out and that counts as a jump start too — nobody can respond to what they see that fast, so it can only be a guess.

Every clean start shows your time, a rank from 'Stalled on the grid' to 'Perfect launch', and how it compares with typical results; your best start posts to the global leaderboard. This is a free, fan-made test inspired by the F1 start procedure and isn't affiliated with Formula 1.

What's a good F1 reaction time?

200 – 230 msPodium

A mouse click or a touch screen adds latency that a driver's clutch paddle doesn't, so compare your starts with each other rather than with the pros.

Tips & Strategy

  • Watch the whole gantry, not one light — the change you're reacting to is all five going dark at once.
  • Don't count the hold. It's random every time, and guessing earns more jump starts than good starts.
  • Rest your finger lightly on the button or the spacebar, already half-pressed, so only the final movement is left.
  • Do a few starts to warm up. Reaction time improves over the first handful of attempts and drops off again when you're tired.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an F1 race start work?
Five pairs of red lights come on one at a time, a second apart. When all are lit there is a short, randomised pause, and then all the lights go out together — that is the start. The random pause stops drivers from anticipating the moment.
What is a good F1 reaction time?
On this test, under 250 ms is a strong start for most people and under 200 ms is excellent. Racing drivers' reactions to lights out are commonly reported at around 0.2 seconds, though they launch with a clutch paddle rather than a mouse click.
Why was my start called a jump start?
Either you moved while the lights were still on, or you launched less than 100 ms after lights out. No one can react to a visual signal that fast, so a launch that quick has to be a guess.
Is the delay before lights out really random?
Yes — anywhere from 0.2 to 3 seconds after the fifth light comes on, different every time, so there is no rhythm to learn.
Is this an official Formula 1 game?
No. It is a free, fan-made reaction test inspired by the F1 start procedure, and it isn't affiliated with Formula 1.
