About Spacebar Counter

The spacebar counter counts how many times you can press the spacebar in a set time and turns it into presses per second. It is the keyboard twin of the CPS test: pick a length, press Space to start the clock, and hammer it until the time runs out.

Five lengths — 5, 10, 30, 60, and 100 seconds — let you test raw speed or stamina. Holding the key down doesn't count, only fresh presses do, so the number measures you rather than your keyboard's auto-repeat. The 5-second test feeds the global leaderboard, and each length keeps its own personal best.

While the counter is on screen it takes over the spacebar, so your presses go to the test instead of scrolling the page. On a phone or tablet there is no spacebar to press, so tapping the box counts instead.

How to Play Spacebar Counter

  1. 1Choose a test length — 5 seconds is the standard.
  2. 2Press Space (or tap the box on a touch screen). Your first press starts the timer.
  3. 3Keep pressing as fast as you can. Holding the key does nothing — every press has to be a fresh one.
  4. 4When time is up you get your total presses, presses per second, a rank, and an estimate of how it compares.
  5. 5Try a longer length to see how much speed you lose to fatigue.

Tips & Strategy

  • Use the side of your thumb and keep it low over the key — the shorter the movement, the faster the presses.
  • Alternate two fingers, or thumb and finger, to roughly double your rate. Many of the highest scores are two-handed.
  • Keyboards vary: low-profile and light switches are faster than mushy membrane keys.
  • Stay relaxed. Tension makes each press bigger and slower within a few seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good spacebar speed?
Around 6 to 8 presses per second over 5 seconds is typical with one thumb. 9 or 10 is fast, and higher rates usually come from alternating two fingers.
Why doesn't holding the spacebar count?
Holding a key makes your computer repeat it automatically. Only fresh presses count, so the result measures your speed, not your keyboard's repeat rate.
Why doesn't the page scroll when I press Space?
While the counter is on screen it takes over the spacebar, so presses go to the test. Scroll the counter out of view and Space works normally again.
Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone?
Yes. Tap the box instead of pressing Space — each tap counts as one press.
Is the spacebar counter free?
Yes — no download, no sign-up, unlimited attempts. Your best for each length is saved on your device.
