About Chess

Chess is the timeless game of strategy on 64 squares, and PLAYNESKO lets you play it free in your browser against a CPU opponent. Castle, fork, pin, and manoeuvre your pieces toward the one goal that matters: checkmating the enemy king.

Few games reward thinking ahead like chess. Every piece moves differently, every move opens and closes possibilities, and the difference between a blunder and a winning combination is often a single quiet square.

How to Play Chess

  1. 1Drag a piece with your mouse to move it to a legal square.
  2. 2Each piece moves in its own way — pawns forward, bishops diagonally, knights in an L, and so on.
  3. 3Capture by moving onto a square occupied by an enemy piece.
  4. 4Put the enemy king in check, then deliver checkmate — a check it cannot escape — to win the game.
  5. 5Castle early to tuck your king to safety and connect your rooks.

Tips & Strategy

  • Control the centre in the opening; central pawns and pieces give your army the most reach.
  • Develop your knights and bishops before moving the same piece twice or bringing your queen out early.
  • Castle to safety, then look for tactics — forks, pins, and skewers win material.
  • Before every move, check what your opponent is threatening, not just your own plan.
