About Number Memory Test

The number memory test measures your digit span — the longest number you can hold in short-term memory. A number flashes on screen, disappears, and you type it back. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer; one mistake ends the test. Your score is the longest number you recalled.

Digit span is one of the oldest measures in psychology. In 1956, George Miller described the 'magical number seven, plus or minus two': most adults can hold about seven items at once. With the right technique you can push well past that, which makes this test as much about strategy as raw memory.

How to Play Number Memory Test

  1. 1Press Start. A one-digit number appears for a moment.
  2. 2When it disappears, type the number and press Enter.
  3. 3Each correct answer adds a digit. Longer numbers stay on screen a little longer.
  4. 4A single wrong answer ends the test and shows exactly where you slipped.
  5. 5Your score is the longest number you got right.

Tips & Strategy

  • Chunk it: read 4829173 as 48 – 29 – 173. Three chunks are far easier to hold than seven digits.
  • Say it in your head with a rhythm, like a phone number. Your inner voice is a short-term memory tool.
  • Look for hooks — repeats, runs, years, and numbers that mean something to you.
  • Type straight away. The memory fades within seconds, so don't stop to double-check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good number memory score?
Seven digits is the classic adult average. Nine or ten is strong, and recalling 12 or more usually means you are using a deliberate technique like chunking.
What is digit span?
The number of digits you can repeat back immediately after seeing or hearing them. It is a standard measure of short-term (working) memory and appears in many cognitive tests.
Can you improve your number memory?
Yes, mostly through technique. Chunking digits into groups, rehearsing them rhythmically, and linking them to familiar numbers raise scores quickly. Memory athletes use elaborate systems to memorise hundreds of digits.
How long is each number shown?
About one second, plus 0.6 seconds for every digit — so a ten-digit number stays up for around seven seconds.
Is the number memory test free?
Yes. No download, no sign-up, and as many attempts as you like.
