About Verbal Memory Test

The verbal memory test measures how many words you can keep track of. Words appear one at a time; for each one, decide whether you have already seen it in this test or whether it is new. Every correct call scores a point, and three mistakes end the test.

The first twenty words feel easy. The difficulty is interference: as the list of seen words grows into the dozens, new words start to feel familiar and old ones start to feel new. The test measures recognition memory — and how well you hold out against that blur.

Tips & Strategy

  • Make each new word vivid for a split second — picture it, or drop it into a quick sentence. Distinct memories resist mix-ups.
  • Beware the feeling of familiarity: everyday words always feel 'seen'. Ask whether you remember it from this test.
  • Keep a steady rhythm. Second-guessing a first instinct is the most common way to lose a life.
  • Use the keyboard — S and N — to stay fast and keep your eyes on the word.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good verbal memory score?
Somewhere around 40 to 50 is typical. Eighty or more is a strong result, and scores above 120 are rare.
What does 'seen' mean in the verbal memory test?
Seen means shown earlier in the current test — not whether you know the word. Every test starts with a clean slate.
Why does the test get harder as it goes?
Interference. The more words you have seen, the more every new word feels familiar, and the more old words blur together. Holding them apart is the skill being measured.
Can I play with the keyboard?
Yes — press S for seen and N for new.
Is the verbal memory test free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no download and no account needed.
