About Equilibrium

Equilibrium is a balance puzzle built on one line of school physics. A brass beam rests on a fulcrum with numbered notches running out to either side, and every weight sitting on it pulls with a torque equal to its value multiplied by the notch it occupies. The beam starts tipped, you are handed a weight, and your only job is to find the notch where that weight cancels the imbalance exactly and brings the total back to zero.

What makes it a game rather than a worksheet is that the arithmetic is never quite convenient. A heavy weight near the fulcrum and a light one far out can be worth the same, so most beams have more than one way to zero them — and plenty have only one. Clear a beam and the next one loads with bigger numbers and longer arms, so the sums keep growing until you place a weight that leaves torque behind and the beam tips for good. There is no timer and nothing chasing you; the run ends when the numbers do.

How to Play Equilibrium

1Press Start, or hit Space, to load the first beam — it arrives already tipped, with weights sitting on one side of the fulcrum.
2Read the imbalance: each weight on the beam is worth its own value times the number of the notch it sits on, and the difference between the two sides is what you have to cancel.
3Take the weight you have been handed and divide the imbalance by its value — the answer is the notch number you need on the lighter side.
4Click that notch to drop the weight there. Land on the right one and the beam swings level and the round is cleared; leave any torque behind and the beam tips further.
5Every balanced beam adds to your score and loads a heavier one. Your best run is saved on this device and posted to the global leaderboard.

Tips & Strategy

Work with the difference between the two sides, never the totals. You only ever need one number — how much torque is missing — and it is usually far smaller than the sums that produced it.
Divide before you look at the beam. If the imbalance does not divide evenly by the weight in your hand, no notch on the board will work, and hunting for one just wastes the round.
Distance multiplies harder than mass. A 2 on notch 9 outweighs a 6 on notch 2, so a weight that looks far too light is usually meant for the far end.
The inner notches are your fine adjustment. When an imbalance is small and awkward, look at notch 1 and 2 first rather than scanning from the outside in.
Use the easy early beams to get fluent at reading notch numbers at a glance. Later rounds are lost to misreading the board far more often than to bad arithmetic.
